The Power of Showing up Human

Last night, while co-facilitating the Bristol Speakers Club, I was reminded of something simple but profound: the most powerful moments don’t always come from polish. They come from humanity.

We often think that to make an impact, whether in speaking, work, or relationships, we have to be flawless. We believe that if we hide our rough edges, calm our nerves, and show only the ‘best version’ of ourselves, then we’ll finally deserve to be seen and heard.

However, that’s not what really resonates with people.

The Power of Vulnerability and Courage

Sometimes it’s a raw, personal story that stirs emotion. Other times, it’s the shaky courage of someone showing up even when their body is telling them to run. Both are powerful because both are real.

Self-Trust: The Foundation of Steadiness

Self-trust is the belief that, regardless of what happens, you can respond, adapt, and recover. Confidence rooted in self-trust endures, while confidence without it can crumble when circumstances shift or expectations aren’t met.

Developing self-trust is not about perfection or eliminating fear; it’s about embracing the journey. It’s about practising steadiness in the face of uncertainty and learning that you can handle challenges even when your mind and body signal apprehension.

Presence Matters More Than Perfection

What makes these moments meaningful is not perfection, but presence. It’s about being willing to be seen as we are, and having the courage to show up imperfect, vulnerable, and fully human.

Growth Comes From Embracing Our Humanity

Growth doesn’t come from turning ourselves into something unrecognisable. It comes from letting our real selves-messy, tender, and courageous-take up space.

Perfection, ironically, distances us. Humanity connects us. And in that connection, we find belonging, relief, and even transformation.

A Gentle Reminder: You Are Enough

So if you’ve been waiting until you feel ready, more polished, or more perfect, let this be your reminder: you don’t need to be flawless to be powerful. You just need to be human.

Your voice matters, not because it’s perfect, but because it’s yours.

Your presence matters, not because it’s polished, but because it’s real.

And sometimes, the bravest thing you can do is simply show up as yourself.
