Hypnotherapy for Speech Impediments
It can be trying having to deal with a speech impediment. Aside from the physical and mental struggle, it is also an emotional one. Children, as well as adults who have a speech impediment experience a challenging time trying to adjust and face the problem. This can cause communication difficulties and can lead to damaged self-esteem, low self-confidence and anxiety. Hypnotherapy helps you to manage stress and improve your body’s ability to relax which can help ease the symptoms.
One of the most complex mental and physical tasks that we do in our everyday life is speaking
We do not see it as such, but for people with speech impediments, it is. When we speak, we use not only our mouth but our muscles, lungs and vocal chords. Aside from the fact that we need to use our mind in order to form thoughts and ideas, and for those suffering with a speech impediment this can be particularly challenging.
Speech impediments have two basic sources. The first is the physical issue which makes it difficult to speak, and the second is the psychological issue which interferes with the person’s ability to speak. If a speech impediment appears when the person is experiencing emotional stress, then the cause may be psychological.
Did you know that speech impediments caused by intense emotion and stress can come and go?
If the person is not subjected to too much stress, then the problem often goes away, or we see a reduction in the frequency of the impediment. However, once that person is faced with emotional stress again, the issue may come back.
Did you know that Hypnosis or Hypnotherapy for speech impediments has been used for decades?
It is used around the world in order to help people with speech impediments manage their thoughts, behaviour and feel more relaxed and at ease.
How does Hypnotherapy for speech impediments work?
Hypnotherapy can be a helpful tool alongside other treatments such as speech therapy, or with clients who have already seen a speech therapist. It lessens the emotional stress that leads to difficulty in speaking by calming the mind, promoting greater relaxation, focusing the muscles and providing relief from low self-esteem and confidence that can be the result of a speech impediment. For example, instead of feeling anxious about a situation, hypnotherapy will enable you to create new, more positive responses to that situation, so you feel more confident and relaxed.
“I went to see Annette after years of low self-esteem and a speech impediment. I needed help in social situations and fear of talking. Annette helped me to be more confident and embrace my speech impediment. After just a few sessions I felt less worried about meeting new people and speaking in large groups. Annette helped me in all aspects of controlling my breathing, anxieties and fears. I thoroughly recommend her.” Richard, Engineer.
If you or a person you know is having a tough time, know that there is still hope! If your speech impediment is impacting on your daily life, visit your GP. They will be able to investigate further and may refer you to a Speech and Language therapist. They can then work with you to help improve your fluency and reduce the impact stuttering has on your life.
